BECOMING CATHOLIC:

The Journey of Christian Initiation

Want to become Catholic or learn more about the Catholic Church?

Catholic Campus Ministry at SMU is pleased to offer students a way to become Catholic through a process of Christian initiation, sometimes known colloquially by the title of its ritual book “OCIA” (the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults).

What is Christian initiation?

Christian initiation is a journey involving different stages and the celebration of unique liturgical rites. Those who make this journey receive formation in Christian discipleship through prayer, doctrinal instruction, conversion away from sin & toward Christian living, service to others, and fellowship with the Christian community. Each person makes it at their own pace. Upon completion of this journey, the fully-initiated Christian spends the rest of his or her life journeying toward Heaven in full communion with Christ and His Church.

Students, want to learn more about the Catholic Church? Fill out this form and we’ll contact you!

Who needs Christian initiation?

  1. First and foremost, students who are not baptized

  2. We also work with non-Catholic Christian students who are interested in becoming Catholic

  3. Some students who are already Catholic and need more formation to receive First Communion or Confirmation may also go through this process

We also welcome:

  • Students who are already Catholic and want to learn more about the faith

  • Students who are interested in the Catholic Church but aren't sure yet about becoming Catholic

NB: Christian initiation at our campus ministry is only for SMU students. Local community members who are not SMU students will be directed to their local parish for Christian initiation.
