SMU Catholic, in partnership with Proyecto Azteca
(http://www.proyectoazteca.org), took a service learning trip to the Texas-Mexico border, along the Rio Grande Valley this summer,
May 18-25.
Along the border, on the side of the United States, are isolated, rural communities called Colonias. These are areas characterized by third world living conditions, and are without running water, electricity, and paved roads. There are over 4,000 Colonias along the United States-Mexico border, with 2,200 of them in Texas.
Students learned about life on the border and aided a family in the Colonias towards first-time home ownership.
